Orbit has been nominated for a Green Room Award, Shirley McKechnie Award for Choreography, for works presented in 2014. Thank you everyone involved in the project: Matt Crosby, Shane Grant, Dr Philipa Rothfield, to name a few.
It is an anniversary of the season of Orbit at the Mechanics Institute - Studio. Thank you for all that came to see the show. More than any other of my work, the audience is so crucial for the performance of Orbit - I was seeing you seeing me performing as if we had subtle non-verbal conversations. This connectivity to the audience has inspired me in my practice-based research at the VCA starting late-February 2015.
There’s one story of the season that I must record in cyberspace. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why I am a performer: I want to connect to other members of humanity at a deep level.
So the story went...
One of the lovely memories from the show was before the last performance started (sorry friends who heard this story before, but I have to record this), an elderly lady named Mary came in the Mechanics Institute and asked, “What’s on tonight?”
Matt, my partner, who was at the box office (among myriad of things he did for Orbit) replied, “There’s a solo contemporary dance show.”
Mary, “How much?”
Matt, “$25 full, $18 concession.”
Mary, “Thank you very much.” and she walked away.
Les Simpson (a member of Metanoia Theatre who was doing the Front of House that night) said to Matt, “Why don’t you give her a discount ticket?” He ran after her and she came back to the venue.
Matt, “It’s a solo contemporary dance show. I can offer you a ticket. It’s 42 minutes long. What have you got to lose?”
Mary, “That’s right. What have I got to lose?”
Mary sat through the show and after the show she said to Matt, “Thank you very much. It’s like meditation, you know. I like when the lady said, ‘We witness, we perceive, we observe,...’”
She left the venue and came back with a classy bottle of Shiraz for us....
Thank you so much, Mary.
There’re some photos that Matt took from the show in the Photo Gallery.
